March 27th, 2008

It has been a week since UMapper (Alpha) went live! We want to thank everyone for helping us catch bugs and improve the map editor application. This is a very early version of the application and with your help, there is no limit to where we can go from here. We have already incorporated a bunch of your comments into our next release which is scheduled for early next week.

Over the past week the website has seen some very nice activity, these are the most popular maps so far:

Dolmens of South Russia
The 30 Greatest Battles of WW II
Walker Map
Brett’s Excellent Adventures
Tudela

As you can see “The Greatest Map of the World” hasn’t been created yet…

Welcome to the first alpha release of UMapper.com!

UMapper is the first application of its kind; it is a visual, universal, web-based map layering engine. UMapper makes it easier than ever to create embeddable maps for Adobe Flashtm and distribute them through a website, blog, or social network. UMapper’s visual map editor enables users of any skill level to add points, draw shapes and add interactive overlays to a map. UMapper is an offshoot of Advanced Flash Components, based in Denver, CO. With several years of experience building custom components and interactive maps for a diverse audience of developers, designers and end-users, the Advanced Flash Components team has built up a strong expertise in interactive map technology and rich Internet application development.

Why is UMapper different?

UMapper is powered by the UMap Component (Universal Mapping API for Adobe Flashtm) from Advanced Flash Components. Leveraging this technology allows us to provide a very stable development environment. It also enables us to manage every aspect of UMapper’s map creation and distribution process. With UMapper, you can use all of the controls available in the UMap API to display geo-data and any layer on top of any map data provider (Microsoft Virtual Earth, Google, Yahoo, OpenStreet, etc.). This makes UMapper truly universal. UMapper utilizes advanced optimization algorithms for rendering vector shapes and displaying large data sets. These performance gains, along with the use of KML for data storage, make the UMapper maps efficient, flexible and optimized for search engines.
