The folks over at Google Maps Mania did a nice write up about our new Wiki Editor Embed. This is the second time we have been featured here and we definitely recommend it as a resource for staying up to date on the latest, most innovative mapping applications (e.g. UMapper.) :)

“I’m a big fan of UMapper, which is a very easy to use map creation tool. My love affair with them just grew stronger with the announcement that you can now embed their map editor directly in any website.” —Google Maps Mania

Thanks Kier! You can check out the post and the example they set up here.

Like the way the UMapper editor works? Now you can have it on your site! On any map that is set for anyone to edit (this can be set under map info), you will see a new embed option on the map view page under the share section below the map: Wiki Editor Embed. Copy and paste the code provided to embed the editor for this map anywhere on the web. Here is an example:

Click here to see the updated map on UMapper, or refresh to see it below:

When embedding the editor, it is important to remember a few things:

  • The Wiki Editor Embed can only be used on a page that is publicly available because it must send data back to UMapper to retrieve saved maps, icons, linked files, etc.
  • Concurrent saves are currently processed using last-in, first-out which means it is possible for someone to overwrite your changes if they are saving at the same time as you. We are looking into this.
  • While it’s not limited, it’s best to embed the editor with a width of no less than 525px so that controls do not overlap.

We are also working on a new feature for the map embed that will allow you to refresh the map without refreshing the page. Check back, this will be a handy feature to go along with the Wiki Editor Embed and it should be available soon.

If you have any questions or suggestions for the new Wiki Embed Editor, please post a comment here or drop us a line.

There have been quite a few excellent maps created this week. The one we found the most interesting is the London 2012 Olympic Village map by scv20. The map shows the area of the Olympic village of upcoming London 2012 Olympics.

In the most recent issue of Smart ComputingTM Magazine (Vol.19 Issue 12), you will find an editorial on page 35 entitled “Web Tips, Enhance Your Time Online.” The article includes UMapper, saying:

Smart Computing(tm) Magazine

“Web-based maps … have changed the way we look at and use maps. However, there is more to maps than simply driving directions. Let’s say you want to plot points of interest, color code certain neighborhoods, share multiple jogging routes, or show a certain mile radius around your house. The site you want is UMapper …” —Smart ComputingTM Magazine

Needless to say, we are pretty excited about being included in the magazine. Making it fast and easy for folks who want to build custom maps is what we are all about!

We’ve just rolled out a new feature in the editor that is a big milestone for UMapper: custom markers! With this new option, you can upload images from your computer or from another website to be used as your marker icon.

Adding a custom icon to your marker is simple:

  1. Open the editor and add a marker.
  2. Next, select the marker and then click “Marker Appearance” in the pop-up marker options.
  3. On the Marker Appearance dialogue, select the “Custom” tab.
  4. From here, the last step is to either type the url to your marker or browse your desktop for a marker.
  5. Once you have selected an image, hit submit and you are good to go.

So what can you use this for? Well, aside from about 1,000 other things we could think of, here’s a map of the upcoming ACDC world tour with some sweet custom skull icons.

If you run into any problems with or have any questions about this new feature, please let us know.
