Only a few days after its creation, the Lemondrop.com’s Baby Name Map was viewed by over eight thousand people and became our most popular map. The map was created to illustrate the Celebrity Baby Name Map article on Lemondrop.com.
The map view statistics counter has been updated to reflect the true number of map views. In addition to views generated on UMapper’s website, the counter takes into the account views generated by the embedded map. This new feature should give you good idea about the amount of attention your map receives.
In addition, map embed code has also been updated to better work in Internet Explorer. If you have an embedded map that does not show up in IE, please re-embed it with the updated code.
Ever wondered who UMapper users are and how they use our mapping application? With map embeds on over FIVE THOUSAND unique URLs, the variety of usage is staggering. It is difficult to single out a particular usage scenario. With that said, there is one common denominator uniting our users, and it is the desire to create awesome interactive maps. Here are major usage categories:
Aside from categories listed above, there are additional ones like Social Networking, Media (Display photos, Videos), Government, Local Businesses and more. If you have a new category or a cool usage example, please let us know!
What makes a map interesting is the content it represents. If you have ever traveled or plan to travel, you may find TullyDawg’s Lost Luggage Incidents map quite useful. For example, you might want to avoid Los Angeles International airport if you want to arrive with your luggage!
Today, we are excited to announce an awesome new feature: Flash markers! UMapper now supports .swf files as custom marker icons. Mapperz originally announced this new feature when we were testing it internally. Now, it is available to everyone! To add a Flash marker, add a marker, hit the “appearance” button in the marker edit options, go to the custom tab, upload an .swf, select it, and you are good to go. Here’s a quick example of what you can do with this new feature:
A couple things to note, marker positioning between the editor and the embed file is off a little bit and sometimes the info window won’t open on Flash markers. We are looking into both of these issues and anticipate a release with fixes soon. Please let us know if you find any other issues and we will try to get them into the next release as well.
