We’ve just rolled out a new feature in the editor that is a big milestone for UMapper: custom markers! With this new option, you can upload images from your computer or from another website to be used as your marker icon.

Adding a custom icon to your marker is simple:

  1. Open the editor and add a marker.
  2. Next, select the marker and then click “Marker Appearance” in the pop-up marker options.
  3. On the Marker Appearance dialogue, select the “Custom” tab.
  4. From here, the last step is to either type the url to your marker or browse your desktop for a marker.
  5. Once you have selected an image, hit submit and you are good to go.

So what can you use this for? Well, aside from about 1,000 other things we could think of, here’s a map of the upcoming ACDC world tour with some sweet custom skull icons.

If you run into any problems with or have any questions about this new feature, please let us know.

I think custom markers are a very cool feature. However, when adding a custom image for the marker, how do you determine the part of the icon that ‘points’ at the marked location on the map? Is it the center of the bottom edge of the marker that marks the location on the map? Also, when zooming out, the custom marker doesn’t appear to be sitting over the location it is marking. Other than that, I plan to put this feature to good use.

When using custom markers, it is best to manually align them over a specific point. Since custom markers can be of various sizes, we simply use TOP-LEFT corner as the anchor point.
